 KUTTANAD – A CONNOISSEURS DELIGHT
Geography of Kuttanad

Kuttanad lies below the sea level which in itself is unique feature. Inhabited lands are about two to four feet below the sea level and the rice-paddy fields about ten feet below.

Kuttanad is also the merging point of several rivers in Kerala such as Pamba, Achankovil, Manimala and Meenachil. These rivers join to form a vast expanse of water called the Vembanad lake which encircles Kuttanad. The lake is one of the most beautiful natural splendors. It opens into the Indian Ocean at the port city of Kochi.

An abundance of water is god’s special gift to Kuttanad. Even in summer season the rivers of Kuttanad never go dry. The lakes, lagoons, rivers and canals together blend into an exotic panorama of waterscapes. A major rice growing region, Kuttanad is also known as the rice-bowl of Kerala. It is also a known centre for fisheries with a sizable share of the population making a living out of fishing.
